GitHub Actions

Automatic tasks on GitHub that run by themselves when code is uploaded or at a set time.

What is GitHub Actions, and how does a website get published automatically?

GitHub is where many teams store their project's code along with its full history of changes. GitHub Actions adds automatic workflows on top of that: when someone pushes a change, or at a scheduled time, a GitHub server runs the defined steps, like installing dependencies, building, testing, and publishing.

That is called continuous integration and continuous deployment. The idea is that publishing stops being a manual task someone does on a Friday night and becomes a process that repeats the same way every time.

Why it matters to your business

When publishing is automatic, improvements ship faster and with fewer human mistakes, and rolling back to a previous version is just another code push. For the business owner, that means an approved fix reaches the site the same day, without depending on whoever has server access remembering to upload files.

How we use this at Damorus

In URG Technology every push to the main branch triggers a GitHub Actions workflow that installs dependencies, builds with Vite, and uploads the store to HostGator over FTP in about two minutes, while protecting the certificates folder. In Atlantic Center GitHub Actions saves a daily backup with version history to a private repository that belongs to the client, out of reach of anyone who might compromise the office computers.
