Mercado Pago (payment gateway)

Mercado Libre's payment platform for charging customers in an online store with cards, PSE, or Efecty.

How does Mercado Pago work for charging customers in an online store in Colombia?

Mercado Pago is the payment gateway built by the Mercado Libre group. With its Checkout Pro, the customer buys on your site, pays on a page hosted by Mercado Pago, and returns to your store. In Colombia, that checkout offers credit or debit card, Mercado Pago account balance, PSE, and Efecty.

When a payment is approved, Mercado Pago notifies your server automatically, and the store can confirm the order without anyone checking by hand. For a reader outside Latin America, it plays a role similar to Stripe or PayPal.

Why it matters to your business

With a single integration, the store picks up cards plus local Colombian payment methods like PSE and Efecty, and gets automatic confirmation on every payment. In exchange, Mercado Pago charges a fee that depends on the withdrawal plan you choose, and it's worth factoring that into the margin on each product.

How we use this at Damorus

At URG Technology, we integrated Mercado Pago Checkout Pro. When it approves a payment, it sends a webhook to a server function that validates where it came from, checks the real status of the payment, deducts stock, and fires off the emails; just opening the checkout doesn't reserve anything, because only a confirmed payment touches inventory. A scheduled task releases any checkout left open for more than an hour, and the dashboard's profitability calculator deducts the real fee based on the withdrawal plan in use.
