Cookies
Small files a site saves in the browser to remember the visitor, like their login or shopping cart.
What are cookies, and when do I need to ask for consent on my website?
Cookies are small data files that a site stores on a visitor's device through the browser. Some are necessary for the site to work, like the ones that keep a session or a cart active; others measure visits or track a person across sites for advertising purposes.
There are similar technologies, like the browser's local storage, that also serve to remember things. Session cookies get deleted when the browser closes, while persistent ones stick around for a set time, or until the user deletes them.
Why it matters to your business
In the European Union, cookies that are strictly necessary to provide the service, like authentication or cart cookies, do not require consent; social tracking or third-party behavioral advertising cookies do. That consent has to be given per purpose, and it has to be just as easy to withdraw as it is to give. In Colombia, when a cookie involves processing personal data, Statutory Law 1581 of 2012 applies. If you sell into Europe, the cookie notice is part of the design from day one.
How we use this at Damorus
The Damorus Projects site uses only strictly necessary and preference cookies, and today it uses no advertising or audience-measurement cookies; that is exactly what our own cookie policy says. On La Roca we chose to build our own analytics rather than load a third-party script. When a project needs to measure visitors from Europe using cookies, the consent notice goes in from the first mockup.
