Desktop app

A program installed on the computer that opens like any other application, without using a web browser.

Is a desktop program or a cloud system better for my business?

A desktop app lives on the computer: it has its own icon, its own installer, and it opens instantly. Today many are built with web technologies, the same ones behind a website, and packaged as a Windows or Mac program, so they look modern and work with the files and keyboard already on the machine.

The difference from a web system is where it runs. The desktop app keeps working if the internet connection drops, and the cloud, when it is used, is there to sync devices and store backups.

Why it matters to your business

For an operation that cannot stop when the internet goes down, like the front desk of a school or the register at a store, desktop is usually the safer choice. It also helps with privacy: if nobody needs to open the system from just any browser in the world, there are fewer doors exposed.

How we use this at Damorus

Atlantic Center's system is a Windows desktop app built with Electron: it replaced a 1996 DOS program, runs on two or more synced computers, and keeps working without internet. It has no public web version on purpose, because protecting personal data, especially data belonging to minors, mattered more than the convenience of opening it from any browser. In our Silver plan, simple software on a single computer starts at $1.000.000 COP$500 USD€500 EUR.
